Faith Words: Open my eyes

I am blessed to be a part of two wonderful Bible classes each week.  One class looks at the Hebrews roots of Christianity by focusing on the Torah.  The other is digging deep into the book of Proverbs.  I love them both.  Each challenges me to realign my life with God's word.

For the last two Sunday nights, the Sunday morning class has spilled over into the Life Group I'm in.  We invited one of our Hebrew roots teachers to share that concept with us on Sunday nights.  Mark Dean came and showed us a glimpse of the richness to be found in linking everything we know about Messiah in the New Testament to what God wrote on the hearts of His people in the Torah and rest of the Old Testament.  Last night, he shared one of his favorite verses with us with a challenge to let it become part of our own prayers:  Psalm 119:18 (NIV)  "Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your law."

Throughout the book of Proverbs, I am encouraged to write God's law on my heart.  I will find in God's word answers for all my questions.  It will offer me wise advice for every situation.  In almost every verse of Psalm 119, the writer tells how highly he esteems God's law and, like Proverbs, how blessed we are when we walk according to it.

Do you want to be wowed by God?  Do you want catch a breathtaking picture of how marvelous He is?  Do you want to stand in awe of God's brilliant plan?  Then, read the Torah.  If we look past the notion that the first five books of the Bible are just an account of Hebrew history and a list of do's and don't's, maybe we can begin to see Messiah written there, too.

No inspired word is wasted or without purpose.  It's our privilege to look for and find that purpose, to let God reveal Himself to us in each written word.  In case you think you aren't up the task, take a minute to read I Corinthians 2 again.  Remember:  we can understand the deep things of God because as Christians, we have been filled with the Holy Spirit.  We can understand things that are spiritually discerned because we have the mind of Christ.  Let that sink in a little.  We each still have to look for the deep things of God but it is possible for us to see what God wants us to see and to understand.  Prepare to be amazed.

Praying for my eyes to be opened wide,

Patrice

Psalm 119:18 (NIV)

Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your law.

For I know the plans I have for You, says the Lord. They are plans for good not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart.
