Faith Words: Just For Today

As the new year begins, it's not uncommon to make New Year's Resolutions.  It's a good idea. It's just difficult to accomplish.

What if instead of New Year's Resolutions, we made New Day Resolutions?  Would it be easier to keep them if we made them just for today? Maybe so...maybe I can.  Like a boss I had at a previous job used to say, "How do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time."  So maybe I can really keep resolutions one day at a time.

Having trouble memorizing God's Word?  What if I write a verse on my heart in the morning and keep it there just for today?

Does the same temptation lure me day after day, year after year?  What if I resist its draw just for today?

There's an old song entitled:  To Love Someone More Dearly (My Task).  The lyrics share simple insight, speaking to simple steps that lead us one day at a time to our goal.

To love someone more dearly every day,
To help a wandering child to find his way,
To ponder o’er a noble thought and pray,
And smile when evening falls,
And smile when evening falls:
This is my task.

To follow truth as blind men long for light,
To do my best from dawn of day till night,
To keep my heart fit for His holy sight,
And answer when He calls,
And answer when He calls:
This is my task.

And then my Savior by and by to meet,
When faith hath made her task on earth complete,
And lay my homage at the Master’s feet,
Within the jasper walls,
Within the jasper walls:
This crowns my task.

Each day is a gift from God.  What a concept! He gives it to us for us to ... what?  What will we do with each day He gives us?

Just for today, I will be patient.

Just for today, I will be kind.

Just for today, I will think on excellent things, on praiseworthy things.

Just for today, I will eagerly seek truth as if my life depends on it.

Just for today, I will guard my heart and not pollute my mind.

Just for today, I will listen for the Lord's call and look for the good works He has planned for me.

Just for today, I will say, "Here I am, Lord."

Just for today, I will put my faith into action.

And then, maybe, just maybe, all those todays will add up to a life spent faithfully following the Lord till my faith becomes sight.

What are you going to resolve to do today? Just for today...

The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels.
