Faith Words: Quiet Time

Thursday, we spent an hour or so on our back porch enjoying a soft cool breeze as we watered the backyard. Just taking it easy. Next week, John is scheduled to have back surgery and I’m pretty sure that’s going to keep us busy for several weeks to come.  So for now, we sit and enjoy the beautiful spring afternoon and each other’s company.

God has woven our lives together over the years till we can hardly remember a time when we didn’t know each other. Our thoughts, our preferences - they’ve blended together to make one new person. Now the desires and needs of the one can be anticipated nearly perfectly by the other. A look, a comment and we know what each other is thinking and likely to say.

We’ve shared so many adventures together, too, that have created beautiful common memories. These pass between us often without a word. We tell each other the same old stories over and over to the point that we can add missed details or just tell the whole story as if it were our own.  This closeness is comforting and gives us a sense of being whole, complete.

That’s not to say we’re not individuals still. We each have our differences and strengths. John brings out the best in me and I hope I do the same for him.

Our relationship gives me a glimpse of the wondrous relationship between Christ and the church. As the bride of Christ, the church tries to learn what pleases her beloved and to anticipate His desires, so she can act in a way fulfills Him and puts Him first, just because she knows Him so well and loves Him so deeply. His words become her words. His thoughts become her thoughts. They can read each other’s hearts with out a spoken word. This closeness is comforting and gives both a sense of being whole, complete.

So we spend time together, quiet time, with just a few spoken words, enjoying a beautiful spring afternoon.

Quietly,

Patrice

Psalm 23:1-2 NIV

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters.
