Faith Words: New Perspective

We get used to patterns in life. That’s why you can drive from your house to the grocery store and not remember a single turn or stop sign. It’s just rote behavior and muscle memory kicking in. 

I do that with my Christian walk sometimes as well. Bible class, worship service, small group. Wait a week and repeat. Do I ever really stop and see those around me?  Do I really hear the message?  Do I mean the words of the song or am I just singing a familiar tune?

To get the most out of life, I need to get a new perspective. Take a different route to the store. Sit in a different seat in Bible class and church. Sing each song, pray each prayer like I’m standing at the foot of the throne all by myself. Listen and takes notes like the Holy Spirit is speaking directly to me. 

Time to get out of my routine and get a new perspective.

Faith Words: My Help

One fall, John and I visited the Mid-Coast region of Maine.     It was beautiful! Lighthouses, fall color, the Penobscot Bay - I could go on and on.   There’s a unique suspension bridge over the Penobscot River near Bucksport that has an observatory at the top of one of the towers. The 420’ elevator ride from the ground to the second floor takes 90 seconds!    It’s the tallest bridge observatory in the world and there are only three others like it: one in China, one in Thailand, and one on Slovakia.    It’s way up there!   The view through the plate glass windows is spectacular!    There are displays showing you what you’re looking at and how far away it is. I wish all of you could experience it.  However, I have a fear of heights. (I know. What was I doing up there then?)    I plastered myself to the inner wall, afraid to take a step toward the windows. Faith Words: Focus

Sometimes, it’s hard for me to focus. To be honest, it’s more than sometimes.   I sit down to read something and as I read, I realize that instead of paying attention to what I’ve read, I’ve been thinking about my grocery list or something else I need to do and have little to no idea what I’ve been reading.  This happens whether what I’m reading is a novel, a post or the Bible. This happens when I pray, too. And I’m so ashamed. What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I keep my focus on the thing in front of me for even two minutes?! I think part of it is me but a large part is our hurried world. So many things screaming for my attention all at the same time and me not being able to shut out the noise and give my undivided attention to whatever is in front of me.  I particularly want to give God my undivided attention when I’m praying, reading or studying His word, or worshiping Him.
